Why did I choose book editing?

Old BooksHow I became a book editor.

Hello there!

I believe that a career choice is a tough one and it was always important for me to do something that I would be happy doing. I eventually found my passion in books and editing but it took me a while to get here, so I thought I’d share a bit about how I did just that.

Book editing and proofreading wasn’t a career choice that I decided on in high school, in fact I could barely make decisions on what to eat for lunch in high school let alone these big scary life decisions that now almost seem a part of everyday.

So a few years out of high school after working in retail, (and knowing that I certainly didn’t want to spend the rest of my life working weekends and serving customers) I decided to take on a Bachelor of Social Science. My reasoning was that I am quite a sensitive and caring person so a career in welfare would be perfect. However, it was that sensitivity and caring that ultimately made me realise that I would not cope in this field as there are too many problems in the country (and the world!) that I cannot fix and that would be too much for me to handle. (I suppose my wanting to fix things should have been a hint!).

As soon as I completed my Bachelor of Social Science all I wanted to do was read and not stop reading. For two years I pretty much did just that (as well as working part-time to pay the bills). After a while a few people (family, friends and work colleagues) started saying, ‘Why don’t you find a career in something to do with books?’. I started searching on the internet and came across A Master of Publishing at The University of Sydney, and the brilliant thing was that I had to have completed an arts or humanities undergraduate degree! Perfect!

I have to admit that at first I was a bit concerned that this would be another course that I would complete and then decide at the end that it wasn’t right for me. Instead I thoroughly enjoyed my classes and discovered how much passion I have for stories and imagination and wanting to help authors to create their best work possible.

So here I am, exactly where I want to be, as a book editor.

Peace!
